Energy is one of the simplest trip costs to estimate, but only when the inputs match how you actually drive. City traffic, climate, vehicle load, driving style, and charging habits can all move the number.
For gasoline or hybrid vehicles
For example, if your vehicle averages 8.5 L/100 km and local fuel is $1.60/L, each kilometre uses roughly 0.085 L. The energy portion of a 20 km trip would be about 20 × 0.085 × $1.60 = $2.72. This is an estimate, not a receipt.
For electric vehicles
Use the cost you actually pay to charge, not only a general residential rate. If you sometimes use public fast charging, your average cost can be significantly higher. Consider keeping a separate setting for your most common charging situation.
Do you include pickup distance?
That depends on what you are trying to decide. If you are comparing offers in the moment, including pickup distance often gives a more honest picture of the opportunity. If you are reviewing a completed passenger trip, you may want to look at both passenger distance and total driving distance.
Energy cost is not the whole vehicle cost
Fuel and electricity are only one part of operating cost. Tires, oil, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, and unpaid return distance can matter too. A driver can use an energy estimate as the fast first pass, then maintain a broader per-distance cost for longer-term review.
Keep your settings current
- Update fuel or charging price when it changes materially.
- Use an efficiency figure based on your actual recent driving where possible.
- Review your setting after changing vehicles, tires, or typical driving area.
- Do not mistake an estimate for a tax record or accounting advice.
